I Was Naive To Have Criticised Jonathan, I Asked My Father To Apologise On My Behalf — Bello El-Rufai Makes U-Turn

Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives and son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly itted that he was naive in his past criticisms of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Speaking on a special edition of Channels Television on Thursday, Bello revealed that his perspective changed when he saw his father, Nasir El-Rufai, seeking an audience with the former president for political consultations.

The younger El-Rufai said the moment prompted deep reflection on his past views, stating, "I told my father that when he sees Jonathan, he should please tell him I’m very sorry, that I’m wiser now."

He itted that his earlier harsh opinions about Jonathan were made without fully understanding the complexities of leadership and governance, adding that maturity and experience have reshaped his outlook on political affairs.

Bello El-Rufai was elected to the House of Representatives in 2023, where he represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency.

He said, “I visited my father after I became a member and I saw him wearing a polo shirt and I said ‘where are you going?’ And he said he was going to see President Jonathan, and I paused because when I was naive or when I thought ego or gratification mattered, I used to be very active in criticising President Jonathan.

“I even forgot in my naivety as many young people do, that we had governance then and I found my father saying that he is going to consult President Jonathan. I said, ‘Please, when you see him, tell him I am very sorry, I am wiser now.’”

“The system is a problem. Now, why did I mention President Jonathan? It takes a lot, particularly in Africa, to lose an election and leave, he did that
," he added.

Acknowledging progress in electoral reforms, the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker stated that if the rumoured amendment allowing citizens to vote without a voter card proves true, he would oppose it.

He affirmed his for strengthening electoral reforms, particularly the electronic transmission of election results.

By Anayo Okoli, Regional Editor, South-East, Dapo Akinrefon, Henry Umoru, John Alechenu, Luminous Jannamike & Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

LAGOS — As Nigerians celebrate 32 years after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, mixed reactions greeted the state of democratic governance in the country yesterday.

On June 6, 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as the new date to mark Democracy Day in commemoration of Abiola’s election.

The June 12 election was annulled by former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd).
In 2019, Buhari assented to the Public Holiday Act Amendment Bill, which made June 12 Democracy Day in Nigeria and a public holiday.

However, the President Bola Tinubu-led istration has been in the eye of the storm over issues, such as worsening insecurity, harsh economic reforms, the use of the Cybercrime Act to intimidate and bully Nigerians and the decline in the country’s democracy.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Social Democratic Party, SDP, Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, yesterday, dissected the state of democracy under the current istration.

They raised dust over the country’s democratic institutions, including allegations of executive overreach, judicial interference, and marginalisation of local governance structures, concluding that democracy in Nigeria was endangered.

Democracy declining under APC — PDP
The PDP raised alarm over what it described as steady decline in Nigeria’s democracy under the leadership of President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba, expressed concerns over the authoritarian tendencies of the current istration.

He said: “Are we practising democracy now? Is this democracy, cronyism, or individualism? We’ll issue a statement. Don’t worry about that.”

Also, the Deputy National Youth Leader of the party, Mr Timothy Osadolor, in his remarks, highlighted the irony of President Tinubu’s current governance style, given his historical role as a frontline pro-democracy activist during the era of National Democratic Coalition, NADECO.

“President Tinubu was one of the early frontliners among the NADECO people who fought for June 12. That was the democracy we are currently enjoying today.

“We have seen brazen attempts to stifle democratic tendencies in the land, unlike during military rule. Court orders are flagrantly disobeyed and discarded.

“History will always reference his istration, not those of his appointees or surrogates,” he added.

Democratic ideals not yet entrenched — ACF
Similarly, the National Publicity Secretary of Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, said the principles of democracy had continued to decline.

Muhammad-Baba, in a chat with Vanguard, said: “The ACF welcomes the anniversary but regrets that Nigeria does not seem to be on a trajectory towards the entrenchment of democratic ideals as June 12 should have dictated.

“Systematically, those principles of democracy, such as free and fair elections, robust representation, checks and balances among the various branches of government, legislative independence and oversight, robust, independent judiciary and ability have all been observed more in the breach than in compliance.

‘’This decline has been on the ground since 1999 but has worsened over the last four, and particularly over the last two years.

“A poignant illustration of the regressive decline in the ideals of democracy is the fact that more and more elected officials are the same people subverting democracy by their actions, inactions and insensitivity to the yearning of the populace.

“It is, therefore, highly regretful to surmise that at the demonstrable pace that the country is going, true democracy will take decades to take root, if at all.

‘’While very dismal, the people cannot afford to lose hope. Something will have to give, as the existential threat that the current mainstream politicians represent, cannot endure.

‘’It is also not too late to retrace our dismal political behaviour. ACF hopes that those that have the capacity and capability will rise to the occasion, ed by electorate, will rise to the occasion to deliver.”

Nigeria’s democracy is work in progress —Afenifere
On its part, pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, said the country’s democracy remains work in progress.

Afenifere, in a statement by its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, said: “It is a milestone because it represents the day democracy and civil rule were reclaimed and restored in Nigeria, after a prolonged, destabilising military rule.

Without a doubt, the sustained and uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 is a product of the sacrifices and commitment of our heroes and heroines in the civil society groups, and other well-meaning compatriots who, along with Afenifere, coalesced into the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, to constitute the vanguard of progressive forces that ensured the restoration of democracy and the birth of the fourth republic in Nigeria.

“We’re happy to note that the progressive forces remain alert, committed and active. And we’re confident that the progressive spirit will continue to sustain and nurture democratic ideals in Nigeria.

“While we celebrate sustained democratic rule in our country on this auspicious occasion, we’re also reminded that democratic practice remains work in progress. We, therefore, call on all our compatriots, particularly the civil society groups, to collaborate with other progressive forces to deepen democratic practice and processes in Nigeria, for the benefit of this generation and generations yet unborn.

“Thus, June 12 is a reminder that although we come from different backgrounds with diverse perspectives, our shared goal of a prosperous Nigeria where equity, justice, social and economic well-being are at play is the driving force behind our determination to see this country progress.’’

Nigeria democracy is in cul-de-sac —OHanaeze Ndigbo
Also, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said democracy in Nigeria has performed below expectation, saying no conscious efforts had been made by the political elites to strengthen it.

The National Publicity Secretary of the group, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, said: “Nigeria’s democracy is in a cul-de-sac, as a result of lack of conscious efforts by successive governments and political elite to strengthen our institutions and de-personalise our political system.

“The most pragmatic approach today to reinvent the fabrics of our democracy, therefore, is restructuring, which constitutes a robust pathway to healthy competition among federating units, devolution of powers, resource control and fiscal federalism.

“The ultimate end of democracy is the well being of the people and if the foundation of our organic corpus is flawed, the aura of democracy will undoubtedly be perennially elusive. Hence, the centre ought to be unburdened to enhance good governance and effective bureaucracy at various strata of social structure.”

Democracy is in coma —Okorie
Similarly, the pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chekwas Okorie, said Nigeria’s democracy is comatose.

Okorie said: “The state of Nigeria’s democracy is at best comatose. The bitter truth is that the overwhelming majority of Nigerians have lost confidence in the basic institutions upon which our democracy rests.

‘’The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is constitutionally empowered to manage the country’s democratic process and cannot be trusted, based on the disappointing outcomes of its previous performance as a highly compromised institution. ‘’The judiciary, which is expected to deliver substantial justice to aggrieved petitioners who were flagrantly shortchanged by the electoral commission, turned out to be a colossal disappointment. Justice was available only to the highest bidder.

“Tragically, the National and state assemblies are perceived as rubber stamps to the executive governments at the national and state levels. Nigeria is dangerously and rapidly drifting into a dictatorship.

‘’There is palpable fear that if urgent steps are not taken to redress the ugly situation before the commencement of the 2027 general elections, Nigeria may be plunged into avoidable anarchy by desperate politicians who are determined to capture political power by all means.”

Nigeria is sliding into civilian dictatorship — Dele Momodu
Delivering a damning verdict, former presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP, Dele Momodu, who expressed concern over the current state of Nigeria’s democracy, warned that the country is sliding into what he described as civilian dictatorship.

The PDP chieftain, who spoke on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, lamented the erosion of democratic values, especially in the lead-up to this year’s Democracy Day.

Momodu said: “I’m very happy that today coincides with the lead-up to June 12 (Democracy Day), so that if we still have any iota of conscience left, we’ll realise we have damaged this democracy.

“The summary of it all is that on the eve of June 12, Nigeria is virtually back to civilian dictators who don’t care how you feel or what you think. Nigerians are hungry.

“We’ve damaged this democracy, and I hope we’ve not damaged it beyond repair because the audacity, the effrontery of this set of politicians—whether in the executive, legislature, or local government—is unbelievable.”

APC has betrayed spirit of democracy — CNPP
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, on its part, said: “It is, however, both ironic and regrettable that the same All Progressives Congress (APC) — a party built by the same political elements and movements that once championed the immortalization of MKO Abiola and the restoration of June 12 as Democracy Day — has become the architect of the systematic erosion of the very values June 12 represents.

“While we recognize and appreciate the efforts of past and present istrations in acknowledging June 12 — particularly the historic declaration by President Muhammadu Buhari recognizing it as Democracy Day — we must not be blinded by symbolism without substance.

“The APC-led government has failed to pursue genuine electoral reforms or the evolution of a people-driven constitution that can institutionalize transparent processes and ability in governance. The sacred principles of popular will, fair competition, and justice, which formed the cornerstone of the June 12 struggle, have been desecrated in the pursuit of power and political control.”

Electoral fraud, power grab a mockery of our democracy — CUPP
Expressing sadness over the decline in democratic gains, the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, said it had been eclipsed by electoral fraud and power grab by beneficiaries of the sacrifices made by citizens before, during and after June 12.

Speaking on the state of Nigeria’s democracy since the June 12, 1993 elections, National Secretary of the CUPP, Chief Peter Ameh said: “The annulled election, widely regarded as a true expression of the people’s will, was suppressed by a military regime, yet its spirit inspired a relentless pursuit of democracy.

“Today, however, that spirit is being suffocated by the very leaders entrusted to uphold it, through rampant corruption, political violence, and authoritarian tendencies that mock the sacrifices of June 12.

“The essence of June 12 lies in the people’s yearning for a free, fair, and inclusive democratic system. Yet, over the years, this vision has been eroded by the actions of politicians who prioritize power over principle.

“Persistent corruption has drained public trust, with elected officials often seen as serving personal interests, rather than the common good.

“As a nation, we cannot allow the legacy of June 12 to be reduced to mere symbolism, while those in power trample on the very democratic values it represents.

“CUPP calls for urgent action to restore the glory of June 12. We demand an end to political violence and electoral manipulation, starting with a full and transparent of the 2023 election irregularities.

“We condemn authoritarian practices and call for the reinstatement of democratic processes in Rivers State. The electoral commission must be purged of partisan appointments to ensure its independence.”

June 12, a defining moment in our journey — SDP
Reviewing democracy in the country, Social Democratic Party, SDP, said June 12 would remain a watershed in Nigeria’s democratic journey but lamented that the country was sadly bogged down by the yoke of leadership conspiracy

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Rufus Aiyenigba, said: “Today, Nigeria celebrates, yet another national anniversary of the pride of place in our political history and the indelible marks that June 12, 1993, made in our national life, particularly as a historic watershed and being emblematic of our democracy, and shaping our collective efforts at nation-building.

“The SDP notes the date with fond reminiscences and great reverence to the memory of the immortal symbol of our nascent democracy, the late business mogul and African icon, Bashorun Moshood Abiola, who treaded the heroic path of the uncommon sacrifice of becoming a martyr, so democratic rule could take firm roots in Nigeria.

‘’June 12, 1993, was quite a defining moment in our journey towards democratic rule, and the date has become an eternal reference point in our journey towards nation-building.

“Today, as always, we celebrate the great sacrificial exertions of the late generalissimo of the Yoruba, whose fame, impact and influence transcended his exalted noble title, as he became a national symbol of true service and the torch-bearer for national redemption.

“As we mark this great day, Nigeria is sadly bogged down by the yoke of leadership conspiracy and the country is not appreciably moving towards attaining the lofty dreams and great vision Abiola had for Nigeria and the people.

‘’It is an understatement that our nation is today, faced with arrested development in all areas that matter.

“Going by what currently obtains, and beyond political arguments, tokenism in mandate delivery, vacuous grandstanding, and the shenanigans of the political elites, our nation is not anyway near the true ideals of the democracy for which Abiola fought and died.

‘’We do not appear to be on the desirable path of meeting the yearnings and aspirations of our people.

The government, today, is far detached from the noble cause of banishing poverty; engendering a sane society and safe Nigerian landscape; of committing to making life truly meaningful for all Nigerians; of enthroning equity, social justice, and of building a good Nigerian society for all.”

Following the position taken by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, and some concerned stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket should be zoned to the south, party leaders yesterday expressed divergent views over the position.

The National Organising Secretary of the PDP, Umar Bature; a former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Bode George and a member of its Board of Trustees (BoT), Mr Jones Onyereri, yesterday, differed over the position of the Wike-led stakeholders.

Wike and a concerned stakeholders’ group had on Monday, met in Abuja and called for the PDP 2027 presidential ticket to be zoned to the south.
They also backed the reaffirmation of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
This came as former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, warned that the PDP risks becoming a political ‘carcass’ if urgent and drastic steps are not taken to salvage its dwindling fortunes.

Reacting to the meeting organised by Wike and the G-5 governors, Mr Onyereri, a former House of Representatives member, in a chat with Vanguard, criticised the recent National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting, saying it was not properly organised.
He said: “The issue is that it (NEC) wasn’t properly convened. According to Section 47, subsections 1, 2, 1, 3, and 5, or thereabouts, it’s clearly stated that only the National Secretary has the authority to send out correspondence on behalf of the party.
“The National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, didn’t issue any notice to about the meeting. He even wrote to confirm that the meeting had been cancelled. So, I believe that’s the crux of the matter, it wasn’t properly convened.
“Eminent stakeholders from across the country have reaffirmed that Senator Anyanwu is the duly elected and substantive National Secretary. A communiqué has been issued to that effect. Additionally, we’ve always emphasised that the PDP must adhere to its constitution, which s the principle of zoning.”

On the zoning of the presidential ticket to the South, Onyereri said: “In this regard, we’ve always stated that the zoning for the 2027 presidential election should favour the South. That was included in the communiqué, which was read out yesterday (Monday).”

Family matters not discussed in marketplaces —Bode George

On his part, former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George called for caution noting that family matters are not discussed in the marketplaces.

Geroge said: “We have a functional national executive of the party and we do not discuss family matters in the marketplace. A meeting is scheduled for June 30 and so, everyone must be quiet about the details of what we want to discuss at that meeting. I want to appeal that this is not the way we run our party, otherwise, we will be discussing our secrets with the enemy. This is becoming too nasty and I urge all of them to their fire and wait for the next NEC meeting.”

It aligns with PDP’s stand— Nat’l Organising Secretary

Also, the National Organising Secretary of the PDP, Umar Bature, said the position of the Wike-led ‘Concerned Stakeholders’ group, aligns with the party’s official stance.

Bature, in a chat with Vanguard, said: “We don’t even know what happened at the meeting. So, how are we to give a reaction? What they said in the communique is it different from what the party believes in? I don’t think so.

“The secretaryship position is clear. I know that some people are being deliberately mischievous. It’s a very clear position of the law and the party stands at risk if we do not abide by that law.”
When reminded that the stakeholders claimed the last National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting was not properly convened, Bature said: “No decision taken during that NEC meeting was binding on the party. Had it been a binding decision was taken, there would have been cause for alarm, but no such decision was taken.”

We’ll respond appropriately —PDP

However, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Debo Ologunagba, when ed, said the party will respond to Wike’s position in due time.

Ologunagba said: “We will react and when we react, you will get it. There is a committee in charge of that. We have a NEC and there is a process in our party. The party will respond appropriately.”

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial District, had been summoned by the Senate Committee following an altercation with Akpabio on February 20, 2025.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has struck out two motions filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio against a Federal High Court judgment that barred the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from conducting disciplinary proceedings against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The motions, dated March 20 and March 25, 2025, respectively, sought permission to appeal the March 10, 2025, decision of the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division, delivered by Justice Obiora Egwuatu.

Justice Egwuatu’s ruling, in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025 between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Clerk of the National Assembly & 3 Others, granted an injunction restraining the Senate Committee from proceeding with the disciplinary action against Akpoti-Uduaghan. The decision followed an ex parte application by her counsel.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial District, had been summoned by the Senate Committee following an altercation with Akpabio on February 20, 2025.

The two motions were subsequently struck out after Akpabio’s legal team filed applications to withdraw them.

According to the document, the Kogi senator prayed that the court grant an order restraining the Senate and its ethics committee from “proceeding with the purported investigation” against her.

Akpoti-Uduaghan asked the court to grant an order “declaring that any action taken during the pendency of this suit is null, void, and of no effect whatsoever”.

The presiding judge ruled that the defendants should come and show cause within 72 hours, upon the service of the order, why an interlocutory injunction should not be issued against them.

Not satisfied with the decisions of the court, Senator Akpabio appealed against the order through his Counsel, Deborah D. Anyanwu.

The Appellant sought among others, "AN ORDER of this Honourable Court enlarging the time within which the Appellant/Applicant may seek leave to appeal against the decision of the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025 between Senator Natasha Akpoti- Uduaghan v. Clerk of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria & 3 Ors. (Coram: Honourable Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu) delivered on 10th March 2025 on grounds of mixed law and fact as contained in the proposed Notice of Appeal attached as Exhibit B.

(Coram: Honourable Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu) delivered on 10th March 2025 on grounds of mixed law and fact as contained in the proposed Notice of Appeal attached as Exhibit B.

"AN ORDER of this Honourable Court enlarging the time within which the Appellant/Applicant may file their Notice of appeal against the decision of the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025 between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan v. Clerk of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria & 3 Ors. (Coram: Honourable Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu) delivered on 10th March 2025.

"AN ORDER of this Honourable Court staying further proceeding in Suit No: FCH/ABJ/CS/384/2025 between Senator Natasha Akpoti- Uduaghan v. Clerk of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria & 3 Ors. (Coram: Honourable Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu), pending the hearing and determination of the Appellant/Applicant's appeal before this Honourable Court."

Ruling on the motions, which were identical in content but filed on different dates, the Court of Appeal struck them out following an application by Akpabio’s legal team to withdraw them.

In the decision delivered on May 21, 2025, the three-member of Justices, led by Justice Hamma A. Barka, also ordered Senate President Akpabio to pay ₦100,000 in costs to the 1st Respondent, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The court’s enrolled order, signed by Deputy Chief Registrar Josephine J. Ekperobe, confirmed that the application to withdraw the motions was granted, and the motions were accordingly struck out.

Additionally, the court directed that Appeal No: CA/ABJ/PRE/ROA/CV/395M/2025 be deleted from its records.

Justice Barka delivered the lead judgment, with Justices Adebukunola A. Banjoko and Okon E. Abang concurring.

The court decisions partly read: "This Court, Wednesday the 21st day of May, 2025, upon reading the Motion on Notice filed on the 20/3/2025 and 25/3/2025 together with the Affidavit in deposed to by Toyo Jimmy.

"Cost of N100,000 awarded to the 1st Respondent. Appeal No: CA/ABJ/PRE/ROA/CV/395M/2025 to be deleted."

The Presidency has issued a stern warning to the lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Mohammed Ali Ndume, against what it described as reckless statement on television.

According to the presidency, such unguarded utterances made Senator Ndume, a former Senate Chief Whip not to command the respect of any right thinking person.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, while reacting to the allegations that a cabal has hijacked Tinubu’s government and that kleptocrats and kakistocrats dominate the istration, accused Ndume of making a sweeping statement without providing any scintilla of proof.

Ndume is entitled to his opinion, as a lone-wolf opposition within the APC, though he most often gets his facts wrong or builds his thesis on a specious, faulty foundation.

“Like he lied about General Buratai being ambushed by terrorists. A ranking Senator making reckless statement on TV cannot command the respect of any right thinking person.

“His allegation that kleptocrats and kakistocrats dominate the government is just too sweeping. And he made it without providing any scintilla of proof.

Kakistocrats? Does he know the word’s meaning, or does he just like bandying ?

“This President has many competent aides, many of whom were accomplished professionals before coming to work for the government.

“And they are doing a damn good job, reengineering the country’s economy to ensure it is put on a solid foundation for sustainable growth,” Onanuga said.

Mr Aliyu Audu has resigned from his position as the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Bola Tinubu.

Audu’s resignation letter was dated June 8, 2025 and was tendered through the office of the president’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The letter reads partly: “I write to formally tender my resignation as Senior Special Assistant to the president on Public Affairs, effective immediately.”

Explaining why he resigned, Audu said he refused to be used as a tool to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state by the All Progressives Congress, APC-led federal government.

In a statement that accompanied his resignation, Audu said: “Good morning fellow compatriots, I have seen many comments about my resignation and I must say it is not act of rebellion but of conscience.

Though I do not align with the PDP, I refuse to be used directly or indirectly as an instrument to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state. That would be a betrayal of both divine favor and democratic principle.

“After all that God has done for us as a nation, especially in these times, we owe it to Him and to posterity to uphold values that reflect justice, balance, and liberty. True democracy thrives on healthy competition, not political domination.

“If we now begin to silence or crush opposition simply because we have the upper hand, then we are no different from the very system we once criticized under Obasanjo in 2003. Such a path is not only politically reckless; it is spiritually dangerous.”

He noted that suppressing alternative voices is not leadership but it is regression.

Audu added: “And it runs contrary to the divine order, which upholds freedom of choice and diversity of thought. God, in His wisdom, allows even belief and disbelief to coexist. Why then should we, mere mortals, fear ideological pluralism?

“Let us build a Nigeria where our strength lies not in uniformity, but in the maturity to compete with ideas, vision, and integrity. Only then can we truly say we are progressing. May Allah SWT forgive us our shortcomings and direct us on the path of righteousness.

“I will continue to our government in power not just because I helped bring it but also because I believe in the success recorded in the area of economic reforms.

“We just differ on political views as I pride myself with being a progressive and a promoter of democratic values which seems to be lost in the unholy alliance of PBAT with Wike.

“That does not mean our gbas gbos will seize o. We still here for the attacks and counter attacks. Oya Agbadorians over to you.”

President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Nigerian Muslims and the global Muslim community on the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir.

He called for Nigerians' renewed commitment to the values of sacrifice, and national unity adding that "we are entering a new era of renewed hope and prosperity that we promised two years ago."

"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Nigerian Muslims and the global Muslim Ummah as we celebrate this year's Eid-el-Kabir," Tinubu said in a statement released Thursday, June 5, 2025.

Highlighting the spiritual significance of the occasion, the President noted, "Eid-el-Kabir represents the high point of the sacred first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, a period filled with opportunities for acts of worship and good deeds. It is a time for gratitude to Almighty Allah for His countless mercies upon us as individuals and a nation."

He reminded Nigerians that "while this festival is marked with joy and celebration, its true significance lies much deeper: Eid calls us to reflect on its core values of sacrifice, devotion, and selflessness."

He stressed that Eid also carries a civic message: "Eid-el-Kabir also reminds us of our responsibilities beyond faith: to show resilience, tolerance, comion, and dedication to the progress of our beloved country. I reaffirm my commitment to these values and express my deep appreciation for the faith, patience, and perseverance Nigerians show as we implement bold reforms."

Reflecting on national progress, the President added, "Together, we have weathered challenging times and are approaching a brighter horizon."

He acknowledged that the path to recovery has been difficult: "Though the journey has not been easy, and some doubted our direction, the resilience of public and private sector leaders, along with the steadfast of most Nigerians, is yielding results. I assure you that the toughest days are behind us. We are entering a new era of renewed hope and prosperity that we promised two years ago."

While acknowledging that challenges remain, Tinubu called for perseverance: "We may not yet be where we aspire to be, but I urge all Nigerians not to lose hope. Let us hold on to our faith and persevere. Our reforms are gaining traction, with key economic indicators now moving in a positive direction. Soon, all will feel the benefits."Nigerian cultural tours

He emphasised that economic policies are designed with people in mind: "The ultimate objective of these reforms is not just to improve statistics but to transform lives and set Nigeria firmly on the path to sustainable development. There are no quick fixes, but we are committed to repairing the foundations of our economy once and for all."

Reassuring citizens of continued efforts, Tinubu said, "Our istration will continue acting in the nation's best interest, ensuring that the gains we are recording translate into improving people's lives."

He reaffirmed commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda: "We crafted our Renewed Hope Agenda to bring prosperity to every Nigerian, and we remain steadfast in our pursuit of it. As we celebrate today, that Eid-el-Kabir ens love, comion, and generosity for all, regardless of faith or background. Let us care for one another's well-being during this season and always."Nigerian cultural tours

Turning to recent national events, Tinubu expressed sorrow over the flooding in Niger State: "In this instance, I recall recent sad developments in our country, particularly the Wednesday, May 28 heavy flooding, which submerged the market town of Mokwa, Niger State, causing deaths and destruction of properties and creating an untold humanitarian crisis. Let us pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and fortitude for their relations. Let us hands with the government to bring succour to the people of Mokwa."

He concluded with a call for national prayer and unity: "Finally, as we observe this Eid, let us continue our prayers for our front-line officers, who risk their lives for our safety and security."Nigerian cultural tours

"Let us pray for our leaders at all levels and our country. Let us pray for peace in our tumultuous world of troubles and uncertainties. Let us dedicate this sacred celebration to seeking God's guidance and blessings for our country."

The Eid-El-Kabir celebration is scheduled for Friday, June 6, while the government declared June 6th and 9th as public holidays.

George urged Wike to reflect on the transient nature of life and power, citing William Shakespeare's Macbeth: "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more."

Chief Bode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has condemned recent remarks by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, asserting that the PDP did not shape his political career.

George described Wike's statement as a "disgusting abomination."

Speaking on Arise TV on Wednesday, George emphasised that the PDP is a strong and enduring political party, likening it to an "iroko tree" that remains steadfast despite challenges.

"The comment of the young man (Wike) because he is the same age as my first son, to me it's a disgusting abomination," George said.

George urged Wike to reflect on the transient nature of life and power, citing William Shakespeare's Macbeth: "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more."

He emphasised that Wike's comments were not only ungrateful but also shortsighted.

The PDP chieftain highlighted Wike's rise to prominence within the PDP, noting that the party had ed his career, including his tenure as governor of Rivers State.

"You are now saying that it is the individual that has the capacity but my young man, look, if you see any ballot box did you see the names of any individuals written on the ballot papers?" George questioned.

George stressed that the PDP is a collective entity owned by its , with rules and regulations guiding its operations.

"Our party is not like APC, owned by an individual. Our party was established with rules and regulations. There's no individual who owns this party (PDP)," he said.

The former PDP deputy chairman emphasised that the party's Board of Trustees is responsible for ensuring that adhere to the party's principles.

"We own the party, we own the assets and the liabilities of the party. When people start to misbehave, it is the responsibility of the of the board of trustees to knock everybody back in line," George explained.

George's remarks come amid growing tensions within the PDP, with some calling for greater ability and adherence to the party's constitution. In response to Wike's comments, George chose to focus on the PDP's strengths and prospects rather than engaging in a personal attack.

"I don't want to waste my time talking about Wike, as I had told you, that is a disgusting abomination... I would like to talk about our party - the future of our party, the strength of our party and the need to convince Nigerians that this our party is in a much better position to handle the problems that are plaguing every Nigerian," he said.Nigerian cultural tours

George expressed confidence in the PDP's ability to deliver goods to the people, saying, “We have the records, the capacity to deliver the goods to the people of Nigeria.”

President Donald Trump has signed a new proclamation barring citizens from 12 countries from entering the United States, citing national security concerns.

The full travel ban affects nationals from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

The restriction will take effect on June 9, 2025.

In addition to the full bans, the proclamation imposes partial restrictions on citizens of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.

There are some exemptions, including athletes travelling for major sporting events, some Afghan nationals and dual nationals with citizenship in unaffected countries, according to the BBC.

Trump stated that the measure is intended to prevent individuals considered potential security risks from gaining entry into the US.

“We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen,” he said in a video message posted on X on Wednesday.

According to the White House, the countries facing the harshest restrictions were deemed to have a “large-scale presence of terrorists,” poor cooperation on visa-related security measures, and inadequate systems for ing travelers’ identities.

The istration also cited issues such as poor record-keeping of criminal histories and high visa overstay rates as contributing factors.

The new directive builds on Trump’s broader immigration crackdown initiated at the beginning of his second term.

On January 20, the president signed an executive order mandating stricter security checks for foreign nationals and instructing federal agencies to review which countries should face entry suspensions due to inadequate vetting procedures.

This move echoes Trump’s controversial travel ban during his first term, which initially targeted seven predominantly Muslim countries and was upheld by the US Supreme Court in 2018.

The ban was later repealed by President Joe Biden in 2021, who described it as “a stain on our national conscience.”

The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, General Christopher Musa, has laid the blame for the country’s insecurity challenges at the feet of Nigerians, lamenting that their silence is responsible for some attacks witnessed in most parts of the country.

The CDS stated this while giving his keynote address at the inaugural media programme of the 2025 Voice of Nigeria Forum.

According to the CDS, the failure of Nigerians to provide the military with community intelligence is at the bottom of the continued terrorism, insurgency, and banditry witnessed across the country.

CDS Christopher Musa
“It is the silence of citizens that enables terrorists to thrive. Ask yourself, who is feeding them? Who supplies their ammunition? Do you want to become a refugee in your own country?”

General Musa reiterated the urgent need for national unity and citizens’ collaboration to overcome Nigeria’s security challenges, insisting that the country remains resilient despite threats and negative narratives.

“Nigeria is blessed with abundant mineral and natural resources, but unless we work together as a people, we will not realise the full potential of this great nation.”

He stressed that no one will come from outside to liberate Nigeria. “If the military fails, the nation fails, but Nigeria will not fail.

“We live in a time where people celebrate failure. Some don’t understand that when the economy collapses, everyone is affected; they have failed too,” General Musa said.

The Defense Chief further appealed to Nigerians to “ your military. Don’t allow our enemies to divide us. When we stand united, we defeat those who want to see this country fall.”

Acknowledging the ongoing security volatility, he assured that victory is possible through public cooperation.

“Some wish to see Nigeria disintegrate; we must never allow that,” Musa charged.

“When a soldier dies and you rejoice, when your nation’s security collapses, you no longer have a home,” he declared.

He further reminded Nigerians that while the military recruits ordinary citizens, not saints, there are systems in place to refine and discipline them. “Yes, they come with baggage, but we have mechanisms to fish out bad elements.”

General Musa concluded with a ionate call to patriotism, unity, and self-determination.

“No country is without security challenges, but other nations are protecting their borders, their people, and their integrity. We must do the same.

“Let us tell our own stories; no one else should define us. Together, we shall build a united Nigeria that works,” the CDS concluded.

In December 2024, eight months after it was incorporated, Panout Oil and Gas Limited was awarded two oil blocks—PPL 300 and PPL 301-CS—in what the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) hailed as a “keenly competitive process.”Nigerian cultural tours

On May 14, 2024, the Nigerian government made headlines when it announced the official start of bidding for oil blocks in the country as part of the 2024 marginal fields bid round.

Speaking at the Miami, Florida International Roadshow in May 2024, Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), declared the bidding process officially open.Nigerian cultural tours

He also noted that although the exercise had first been announced on April 29, 2024, it marked a significant step forward in Nigeria’s strategic hydrocarbons development plan.

The Bola Tinubu government called for applications to acquire 12 oil blocks and seven deep offshore assets.

Interestingly, SaharaReporters has learned that just eight days before this official commencement of bidding—on May 6, 2024—a company named Panout Oil and Gas Limited was ed with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). This newly formed company would later participate in bidding for oil block licenses in the same round and win two oil blocks.

By June 12, the government had further expanded the offer, announcing an increase in the number of oil blocks available in the 2024 marginal bid round.

However, a closer look at the bidding criteria published by the NUPRC has raised serious questions about how Panout Oil and Gas Limited—a company ed just two days before the official bid announcement—managed to secure two of the coveted oil blocks.

According to the pre-qualification guidelines available on the NUPRC website for the 2024 marginal bid round, the agency stated, "Prospective Bidder or Bidder which is a newly incorporated company in Nigeria, shall be qualified with the information of the parent company or aggregate information of its shareholders and their s."Nigerian cultural tours

Checks, however, reveal that Panout was ed as an independent company with the CAC, not as a subsidiary of any other entity.

A review of the company’s beneficial ownership records in the CAC registry shows that only one individual—Alao Saheed Olatubosun—is listed as having significant control. In fact, the data indicates that he owns 100% of the shares, with no other shareholders or corporate ownership listed. This suggests that Panout is not linked to any parent company.

Regarding the requirement for "financial viability assurance," the NUPRC listed the following conditions: “Statement of Profit or Loss & Comprehensive Income; Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet); Statement of Change in Equity; Statement of Cashflow; Notes to the s; Auditor’s Report; Management’s Discussion; Governance and Ownership Structures; Five (5) years of Financial Summary."

It remains unclear how a company that was only two days old before the bid announcement—and just eight months old when the winners were announced—was able to meet the NUPRC’s financial and documentation requirements.

Other conditions listed include evidence of a verifiable source of funding, which may be any of the following: Minimum average annual turnover of US$200 million for deep offshore; minimum average annual turnover of US$50 million for onshore and shallow water assets; minimum cash in bank of US$200 million for deep offshore; minimum cash in bank of US$50 million for onshore and shallow water assets; bank guarantee to the tune of US$200 million for deep offshore; bank guarantee of US$50 million for onshore and shallow water assets and a market capitalisation of not less than US$1 billion for deep offshore and US$200 million for other categories.

The sole listed owner of Panout, Alao Saheed Olatubosun, is also the Chief Executive Officer of Blueprint Business Technology, an IT firm.

A review of the company’s website by SaharaReporters found no evidence that Panout Oil and Gas Limited is listed as a subsidiary or of Blueprint Business Technology.

SaharaReporters attempted to reach the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) through the number published on the 2024 licensing round portal, which is said to be operational 24 hours a day for inquiries. However, the line failed to connect.Nigerian cultural tours

As of the time this report was filed, text messages sent to the number seeking comment had not received a response.
