Lanlate I Satellite Earth Station was Nigeria’s first international satellite telecommunications gateway to the outside world.

It became operational in March 1971 with one antenna (Lanlate I) tracking the Indian Ocean INTELSTAT satellite. A second antenna called Lanlate II was added in December 1975. This one operates with the Atlantic Ocean satellite.

Today it seems to be abandoned and unused.

The Post and Telegraph Department (P&T) later the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (Nitel) used the earth station to transmit telephone calls via satellite.

P&T/Nitel was a member of INTELSAT. Originally formed as International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO, or INTELSAT), from 1964 to 2001, it was an intergovernmental consortium owning and managing a constellation of communications satellites providing international telecommunications and broadcast services.

P&T/Nitel was also a member of INMARSAT. The International Maritime Satellite Organization (INMARSAT) was a non-profit intergovernmental organisation established in 1979 at the behest of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)—the United Nations maritime body—and pursuant to the Convention on the International Maritime Satellite Organization, signed by 28 countries in 1976.

The earth station was also used to transmit television signals. I had a relative that worked at P&T/Nitel and any time that Nigeria hosted a major event, like the 1980 Nations Cup, she would say that P&T gave the NTA the frequency that they were transmitting on. There was no NCC or NBC at that time, so the Ministry of Communications along with the P&T regulated radio frequencies.

She would sometimes say the same thing when the NTA showed international events live, like the 1985 Under 16 World Championships, and we would argue that the NTA was receiving signals, not transmitting.

Today many private organisations are able to transmit by satellite without going through Lanlate and almost everybody has a satellite dish at home. The earth station at Lanlate has been abandoned.

The earth station at Lanlate is not the first earth station in Nigeria.

The first earth station in Africa was set up in Kano in 1961 by the National Aeronautics and Space istration (NASA) of the United States. In the mid-1960s, NASA used a network of communication bases around the world to track spacecraft during various missions of the Gemini program. One of these stations was located in Kano, Nigeria. Here are pictures of that earth station.

NITEL: Reps probe sale, abandonment of earth satellite station in Oyo

By Levinus Nwabughiogu-Abuja
November 18, 2021

House of Representatives, Wednesday, mandated its Committees on Telecommunications and Privatisation and Commercialisation to investigate the sale and abandonment of the eart satellite station at Lanlate in Oyo State.

The station belonged to the privatized Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL).

Considering a motion on the matter presented by Hon. Oluyemi Adewale Taiwo at the plenary, the expressed worry that the abandonment of the station has rendered the equipment obsolete.

“Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) was a monopoly service provider in Nigeria until 1992 when the Federal Government enacted the Nigerian Communications Commission Act, allowing new entrants into the Communications sector.

“NITEL has contributed immensely to the development of the sector in many ways as it seconded several pioneer staff to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Digital Bridge Institute.

“NATCOM acquired all assets owned by NITEL and its mobile arm, Mobile Telecommunications (MTEL), thus ending a decade of trickery over the resale of the company.

“Since the Privatization of NITEL in Lanlate, Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State, the infrastructure has been abandoned thus becoming obsolete with many of its equipment rendered useless”, Hon. Adewale explained while presenting the motion.

Adopting the motion, the House gave the Committee 2 weeks to carry out the assignment and report back to it for further legislative action.

You're the most daft person I have ever seen in my life before, if you don't have anything to comment can't you just keep quiet. Tribalism ooze out of you, what brought ipob into this thread.
For those that Will call me Igbo just because of what I said, check his post very if he made any sense and also there are more than 270 tribes in Nigeria , nairaland is made for Nigerians, not just for Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa

Nigerians have no concept of the future ... At least not collectively, as long as they are able to oppress thier neighbors and have people call them oga when they enter the general population... That is enough for them, the pack of fools will travel abroad and raise thier children but subject the people in Nigeria to perpetual poverty of the mind and means
