Nairalanders Who Of Recent Have Kids In Nigeria. Do You Fear For Their Future?

Nigeria is in a terrible state the worst state it has ever been. Youth unemployment of over 80 percent. Low wages. The world's poverty capital. Crippling hunger and insane food inflation. With all this problems here and there, a few of my friends have vowed never to have kids till they escape from the country but I still see young small children here and there who were born 1 to 3 years ago.

Nairalanders who recently had kids how do you feel about your kids? Do you worry about their future or are you optimistic that Nigeria might become a better place in the future for your children. How do you also take care of them with the rising cost of everything from transport to food, rent and all basic necessities?

The fact that I'm still single is of relief to me: at least when shit hits the fan, no partner or kids to worry about..

Regardless of where you have your kids. I believe alot of work needs to be put into ensuring the kids turn out well and dont stray in life.

I agree and it that kid of Nigerian decent abroad generally turn out well just because the society rewards hard work. So if a child puts in his shift, he almost certainly will be fine.

On the other hand, you and I know that not all nigerians youth who desire to travel end up travelling as travelling itself is expensive. Have a few kids, give them good education, ensourgae them in any sport or endeavor they love. Just do your best and leave the rest to God.

Yeah but you can't even get the jobs to give kids a decent life if you wanted to. The average pay of most jobs in Nigeria is 30 to 50k. Only 8 percent of Nigerians earn above 100k which is basically transport and food money for one person in a city like Lagos.

I feared for myself in the light of brutal stories, which victims of SARS narrated. There was one story in particular that made me realize this shit can happen to anyone, none of us is really immune to it, hell I am not immune!

The story I talk about was shared on Twitter by Pastor Adegboye's wife (the twitter handle had her name on it, I can't say for sure if she was the one behind the ) A young lady went out around 7pm to get food items from her mum's shop, which wasn't far from their home. On getting to the shop area, SARS bundled her into their van where other people were being held captive. To cut a long story short, she ended up being tortured into a confession of a crime she knew nothing about and spent 3 years of her life in prison (I think @ Kirikiri) before the legal team @ Redeem Church were able to free her.

I am in the habit of strolling out of my estate around 7 or 8pm, to get groceries or toiletries at a nearby supermarket. There's a popular petrol station where the supermarket is as well, so there's often activity there. When I watched that lady's of her ordeal, I couldn't help thinking to myself, what happened to her, could have easily happened to me too. Because, SARS may be parked at one corner of that petrol station bundling people away for no reason and I may end up a victim, because I went out to shop.

I have always wanted to live in Nigeria, while I continue to travel the world and visit other countries. But, lately I have been seriously contemplating relocating. I once saw a comment on NL where someone said relocate for the sake of your unborn children and I was like, why do we make everything about children. We should be thinking of relocating for ourselves first and foremost of all, before any unborn children. You are in the land of the living, unborn children have nothing to worry about or fear yet.

Someone in my church went out to buy suya just across the road and he was arrested by SARS and taken to Gbagada and was just released this year. I think he spent 5 years. 5 years of someones life gone like that. It is so scary.

You see what I am talking about? And if you don't know people that have a bit of clout who can help you or you are not well connected, you are in serious trouble. My heart was broken by the brutality people shared regarding SARS and the stories keep getting worse, each time I hear a new one.

People who have been to Nigerian prison and out, are never the same again. The living conditions there are enough to drive you crazy as I have heard.

A neighbour once told me, to avoid having anything to do with the police like a plague. This was long before SARS even existed, I have never forgotten his words, so I try to live a quiet/peaceful life, avoiding conflict with people, the type that will cause them to call police for you.

But, in Nigeria it doesn't matter if you are a responsible citizen minding your own business, these SARS people and regular police will still look for your trouble, judging by all the victims we've seen.

You can be in your house and sars will still come and kill you. Imagine the horrors of the told stories. Now imagine the millions of stories untold. Many more brutal than what we have heard. What of even the army and it's excesses. I had a Sierra Leonean classmate and when he talked about the atrocities the Nigerian army committed in their country, fear gripped me.

This country is in a mess, it has gone from bad to worse, nothing seems to be working.

Just yesterday I was ruminating about my early days in primary school where during break time I ed the long queue with my spoon and food flask to buy rice and plantain with just #5.00, i buy and eat satisfied.

Will that amount satisfy our todays kids?
Well, let me leave that for you to answer.

In today's Nigeria, I pity those couples still popping out kids like a dog, many don't Know what they are getting those kids into.
The rate of crime perpetuated by youths, kidnapping, ritual killing etc is on the HIGH side.

It is not people like Davido that goes into ritual killing, kidnapping etc. It mostly committed by children of the poor, if you tell them not to rush into marriage, if you tell them to be financially buoyant before having kids, they will tell you, you don't mean well for them, they see you as an enemy.

Anyone who can think deep will reason with me that the future of this country is VERY scary, no hope for the children of the poor.

Even if you have the money, how can you do that relocation when foreign countries are making it strict and stressful?

If no good job, don't marry or have kids!
Take care of yourself first and make sure you cross all your Ts and Is (stable job).

Me I don't even like western anglophone nations like that. I am absolutely fine with Mexico, South America, and all of Asia. South American nations exclusive of Venezuela and Ecuador get money die. Strong ports, amazing food, and beautiful women. Mexico is no brainer it's in the richest continent on earth. One can be in Mexico and build for the American consumer. It is literally just over the border.

Be misleading people with your thinking o, since when have we been hoping that Nigeria is going to get better but instead it's getting worse everyday by everyday. Boss don't trust in Nigeria getting better anymore but individual improving themselves anyhow they can for the sake of our unborn kids but not necessarily wanting to leave the country at all cost, we can still be the best we've always inspire to be while in the country but with maximum hard-working, being focus that will lead us to our goals of being successful.

The topic/thread reminds me of what my father said to me 2 or 3 years ago.

He asked me if I had a man or serious relationship in my life at the time. I said not really because the guy I was dating then was speaking what kind of spanish I didn't like or understand. Dude was talking about having 4 kids.

When my dad heard this he laughed and said two kids are more than enough in this age and time, things are not going to get better in our country or the world at large. Children are also going to be more stubborn and difficult to manage, than ever before. Coming from a man who had seven kids of his own, I didn't doubt him at all. Now look at what's happening in our country not just with SARS protests, but the economy and polity as a whole.

That same guy who was mouthing off about having four kids, kept going on and on, about the cost of baby food, diapers etc when I last saw him. He wouldn't shut up about how much he spends and the high cost of things. I just said this is your first child and you are complaining like this, what will you do when the other 3 come? Or have you forgotten you are on a mission to have 4 children?

It's the black man's way: they let the short euphoria of having a child overcloud the negative realities of the environment in which that kid will be raised.

Whenever I see folks celebrating the birth of a child in this shithole, I asked myself if they've paused for a second and wondered what future they are leaving for their offspring.

Birthing everywhere, yet jobs are not being created to accommodate the growing population.
